I did not include zippered pocket instructions for my latest pattern - the Hydrangea hobo bag - within the pattern. Instead I decided that I would write up a blog post on how I make all of my zippered pockets. I will also try to explain how to make the pocket smaller for smaller sized bags.<br />
<br />
Assuming you are working on a pattern where the bag is at least 12 inches wide and 9 inches high, this tutorial will work. <br />
<br />
<b>What you will need:</b><br />
<br />
(1) 8-inch zipper<br />
(2) pocket lining pieces 10 inches W x 7 inches H<br />
(2) lightweight fusible interfacing pieces 10 inches W x 7 inches H<br />
(1) piece of lightweight fusible interfacing 12 inches W x 4 inches H (to reinforce opening)<br />
<br />
<b>Note:</b> if your bag is smaller, you need to reduce the dimensions of all pieces. For example, if your bag's lining is 10 inches W x 8 inches H, than you would cut your pocket lining pieces 8 inches W x 5 inches H. You would then need a 6-inch zipper instead of an 8-inch.<br />
<br />
<b>STEP 1:</b><br />
<br />
Fuse matching interfacing pieces to the WS of both of your pocket lining pieces. Fuse the remaining piece of interfacing to the WS of one of your lining panels about 1 inch from the top edge.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRICQgCYaaaVuWmeYCqxClqtHB2HYPDXvQTxqdEilswAsb8SMiCcBwip80RD_PRXjigrEzkcETuj3DXbOsNfblnV_ZSz1z-I4gxG3HvK31Q0_K26LVtLMFnI2qdw938EmHkCkHA65e-zfR/s1600/IMG_3741.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="265" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRICQgCYaaaVuWmeYCqxClqtHB2HYPDXvQTxqdEilswAsb8SMiCcBwip80RD_PRXjigrEzkcETuj3DXbOsNfblnV_ZSz1z-I4gxG3HvK31Q0_K26LVtLMFnI2qdw938EmHkCkHA65e-zfR/s400/IMG_3741.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<b><br /></b>
<b><span id="goog_1800175037">STEP 2:</span></b><br />
<br />
<span id="goog_1800175037">Take one zippered pocket lining pieces and draw a rectangle on the WS that is 8 inches W x 1<span style="color: red;"> cm</span> H. You want this rectangle to be positioned 1 inch from the top and centered so there is 1 inch on either side from the edges.</span><br />

<br />
<b>STEP 3:</b><br />
<br />
Take the zippered pocket lining piece with the rectangle and pin it on your lining panel (the one with fusible on the WS) about 1.5 inches from the top edge and centered in the middle of your panel. Stitch along the rectangle lines keeping your needle in the down position to make turning corners easier. I like to use a shorter stitch length (2.2 approx.).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgykIUM2_SQj-VKG90BJJg4c56kNfOA9iWdgtPHmpsZImFZ0a_pYY7lX8X2gBPcBkwsQEoyjIHKuEa-26xzHsmkykqKXIcV1elP1tBVj-3k86Q_JUlWSzf9YV6ebeZgBQAhkx_BjUbyc0AF/s1600/IMG_3771.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgykIUM2_SQj-VKG90BJJg4c56kNfOA9iWdgtPHmpsZImFZ0a_pYY7lX8X2gBPcBkwsQEoyjIHKuEa-26xzHsmkykqKXIcV1elP1tBVj-3k86Q_JUlWSzf9YV6ebeZgBQAhkx_BjUbyc0AF/s400/IMG_3771.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>STEP 4:</b><br />
<br />
Draw a horizontal line through your rectangle stopping about 1/2 inch from both ends. Then draw diagonal lines from the horizontal line to each corner as shown in red below.<b> </b><br />
<br />

<b>STEP 5:</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b> </b> </div>
<b>STEP 6:</b><br />
<br />
Pull the pocket lining piece through the opening you just cut out towards the WS of your lining panel. Press the rectangle opening's seam nice and flat to create a nice rectangular opening for your zipper.<b> </b><br />
<br />

<br />
<b>STEP 7:</b><br />
<br />
Place your zipper inside the rectangle opening and pin or glue in place (depending on what you prefer). Stitch the zipper in place by sewing around the rectangle opening with a 1/8" seam allowance.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I had an ah-ha moment and decided that someone needed to design a pattern to replace that old unpopular "fanny pack" and come up with something more modern. And so I came up with the Orchid Waist/Sling bag!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
This bag is a nice size and full of awesome features:<br />
<ul>
<li>adjustable strap so the bag can be worn around your waist or on your back</li>
<li>main compartment with a zippered closure</li>
<li>2 slip pockets inside</li>
<li>large front exterior pocket with a flap that also has a built in zippered pocket </li>
</ul>
<br />
Measurements for the bag are 11.5 inches W x 8.5 inches H. I can see this as a unisex bag depending on what fabrics you use. Here are a few photos to demonstrate!<br />

<br />
The great part about this wrist strap is that it does not have any exposed raw edges at all - not hidden in the D-ring, not hidden inside the strap. In this example I will be making a strap that is 1 inch wide. (You can adjust accordingly for your project - just keep in mind that you need to quadruple the amount of fabric you want so if you want a strap that is 1/2" thick, you will need to cut your fabric 2 inches high.)<br />
<br />
For this tutorial you will need:<br />
<ul>
<li>(1) D-ring strap fabric 3 inches W x 4 inches H</li>
<li>(1) piece lightweight fusible interfacing 3 inches W x 4 inches H</li>
<li>(1) Wrist strap fabric 15 inches W x 4 inches H</li>
<li>(1) piece lightweight fusible interfacing 15 inches W x 4 inches H</li>
<li>(1) 1" D-ring</li>
<li>(1) 1" Swivel clasp</li>
</ul>
Before starting, fuse the matching interfacing to the wrong side of both strap pieces.<br />
<br />
<b>Create your D-ring strap piece:</b><br />
<br />
Start by folding the strap piece horizontally, press to create a crease. You should now have a piece that is now 3 inches W x 2 inches H.<br />
<br />

<br />
Open up the strap piece and fold both halves in towards the center crease. Press.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Fold in half again along original crease. Press. You should end up with a strap piece like the photo below. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYIAPHPF8sfSGla-yrlZ_Mn5MSBx47Ppd_R3hdulepYIt4x5UgtFZec_CS33SwvD1cwG5pkY0LQ1M-sBLSKvU0sKPHRoUYzhf_z5uHcPwtjeyIiTm8N0l-I_0Jcs42M0byCE7vSfsqJAna/s1600/IMG_6252.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="232" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYIAPHPF8sfSGla-yrlZ_Mn5MSBx47Ppd_R3hdulepYIt4x5UgtFZec_CS33SwvD1cwG5pkY0LQ1M-sBLSKvU0sKPHRoUYzhf_z5uHcPwtjeyIiTm8N0l-I_0Jcs42M0byCE7vSfsqJAna/s320/IMG_6252.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Stitch along both sides of the strap piece with a 1/8" seam allowance. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhC3C6fCxx5S4z4WKEXgvN2s9tdwLXGadc8tdWcpH7szDb84mq3a_INZ3tgMeYsvIjkfJGDhnbWzR8na2oD9YgX3HnTYgs9zhQ8WRa46cuPr835FSSOkeRWBMAM5-xUP7sJS27TSfZdNIzD/s1600/IMG_6254.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhC3C6fCxx5S4z4WKEXgvN2s9tdwLXGadc8tdWcpH7szDb84mq3a_INZ3tgMeYsvIjkfJGDhnbWzR8na2oD9YgX3HnTYgs9zhQ8WRa46cuPr835FSSOkeRWBMAM5-xUP7sJS27TSfZdNIzD/s320/IMG_6254.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Slip the strap piece through your D-ring. Fold the ends together and baste stitch together. Set aside.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiALodRmUA2oAT8Fi7yt8zBZCsI9NDB6K4VowXGggbjlj8wwWBuVsxZCmSgJqVHK2JwUhAk9pleO71HqHof5z-4Fv8wo2vUSzmPDvcGHPq370-RXDx6ihaCYwZpQi2DFaDbpP6mpUzl6scW/s1600/IMG_6255.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiALodRmUA2oAT8Fi7yt8zBZCsI9NDB6K4VowXGggbjlj8wwWBuVsxZCmSgJqVHK2JwUhAk9pleO71HqHof5z-4Fv8wo2vUSzmPDvcGHPq370-RXDx6ihaCYwZpQi2DFaDbpP6mpUzl6scW/s320/IMG_6255.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>Create your wrist strap:</b><br />
<br />
Follow the same steps as the D-ring strap piece with the wrist strap piece until you end up with a fabric casing as shown in photo below. DO NOT stitch the strap closed yet!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOrk1BttduHyqDals9iM6QuRsYNQNUfpwo1kWbl-UlnIjg7IV3k561y3_4KjCpn9BVkNaN2qqdFx3MlC9ldTJjqXxOryFEKMwXksxKhiHbwbKF-P9yU-Ef7WPSua-4T_eAONhocwsheHlC/s1600/IMG_6253.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOrk1BttduHyqDals9iM6QuRsYNQNUfpwo1kWbl-UlnIjg7IV3k561y3_4KjCpn9BVkNaN2qqdFx3MlC9ldTJjqXxOryFEKMwXksxKhiHbwbKF-P9yU-Ef7WPSua-4T_eAONhocwsheHlC/s320/IMG_6253.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Take your swivel clasp and pass the wrist strap piece through the ring of the swivel clasp. Now take both shorter edges of the strap piece and open them up. Make sure you do not twist the strap piece and pin the edges right sides together.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh66zo7vJugHVCkOAhIjPZtxP5X79akuE4ScfHUFGjKPwGkBK8ERp1xV4_qjxzdKw1dSZ-llDdsGAYvgH4HrLAqUFZPMg0kA_rpWx5TFmCofNErcfhWPQ0lCbWlg0oZ7-Zkmp8CcuQ7pIjg/s1600/IMG_6257.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh66zo7vJugHVCkOAhIjPZtxP5X79akuE4ScfHUFGjKPwGkBK8ERp1xV4_qjxzdKw1dSZ-llDdsGAYvgH4HrLAqUFZPMg0kA_rpWx5TFmCofNErcfhWPQ0lCbWlg0oZ7-Zkmp8CcuQ7pIjg/s320/IMG_6257.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Stitch the shorter edges together. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmC8haQ6cEO820b2Z9Q4zyAWZlFNV5gCsJjzzn2PUG-acUdwCcGkgwznrfQDHMU6x6TE06wtXTQVWDdXWG4LV0gg7en0zFOsQxxonbKwnzyYq6vfuUWxBSKfGEpU6HuTXjrmZrWy61oyLm/s1600/IMG_6258.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmC8haQ6cEO820b2Z9Q4zyAWZlFNV5gCsJjzzn2PUG-acUdwCcGkgwznrfQDHMU6x6TE06wtXTQVWDdXWG4LV0gg7en0zFOsQxxonbKwnzyYq6vfuUWxBSKfGEpU6HuTXjrmZrWy61oyLm/s320/IMG_6258.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Press the seam allowance open. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPOl5OY6G6LAWWiTHHaSxUMQtBQ5Caa1bjXr7QNUmfjfGUZiqjRkS-dhTtE0UagQhMs1_MBpEgktBzgEJrdValLmtyv4-mId3GLEhzIN_tpYAXOBAXjgX5bD7r7WRKdXwQ1twXwYyTzSsR/s1600/IMG_6259.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="304" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPOl5OY6G6LAWWiTHHaSxUMQtBQ5Caa1bjXr7QNUmfjfGUZiqjRkS-dhTtE0UagQhMs1_MBpEgktBzgEJrdValLmtyv4-mId3GLEhzIN_tpYAXOBAXjgX5bD7r7WRKdXwQ1twXwYyTzSsR/s320/IMG_6259.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Then re-fold your wrist strap into a loop that is 4 layers thick. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7UOA_EENJbPo1eOhtF9ArWeVYM03XM1aylJ0WRHHAkNrRCP3jZAd2eJ8l8159Hh8EQj2yAg9BPaoprMVoTF61sHECStxKX_GQlOvEIlWxVdbaQwCBdPSIyhUcs9EA5nfkSatHVvMYjufC/s1600/IMG_6260.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="168" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7UOA_EENJbPo1eOhtF9ArWeVYM03XM1aylJ0WRHHAkNrRCP3jZAd2eJ8l8159Hh8EQj2yAg9BPaoprMVoTF61sHECStxKX_GQlOvEIlWxVdbaQwCBdPSIyhUcs9EA5nfkSatHVvMYjufC/s320/IMG_6260.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Pass the strap around the arm of your machine and stitch one edge of the strap with a 1/8" seam allowance making sure you are pushing the swivel clasp out of the way as you sew. Make sure to backstitch at the end.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHh2CDIWRQS3njqdc1I_cwJn4GwSjOoDK6uPMGijXPy9f2CW8pHGM6Bpe-vNC9N4W2Gh8Wt1LsA-Es10_mD0KVrT4Us2mxzOBp6UwVJrrjaA-u3LqslPQd7FGjqJk9m6UuftKJNa54YAPL/s1600/IMG_6262.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="291" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHh2CDIWRQS3njqdc1I_cwJn4GwSjOoDK6uPMGijXPy9f2CW8pHGM6Bpe-vNC9N4W2Gh8Wt1LsA-Es10_mD0KVrT4Us2mxzOBp6UwVJrrjaA-u3LqslPQd7FGjqJk9m6UuftKJNa54YAPL/s320/IMG_6262.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Stitch the other edge of the strap with a 1/8" seam allowance again sliding the swivel clasp down as you sew.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6FGQZPgGPDrxYiP8dzQP4IEpqDqwERxVvbbnKLGcDqJZmoi9dRdOjB8nmbKSEqmdkacA6Wq0pojyZiomIgnslZ2TPcs91-Ocw-zho2sa7dzh_bNdv92cl3DJpltDpb6nn0VjoUma90QHm/s1600/IMG_6264.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="248" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6FGQZPgGPDrxYiP8dzQP4IEpqDqwERxVvbbnKLGcDqJZmoi9dRdOjB8nmbKSEqmdkacA6Wq0pojyZiomIgnslZ2TPcs91-Ocw-zho2sa7dzh_bNdv92cl3DJpltDpb6nn0VjoUma90QHm/s320/IMG_6264.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Now find the joining seam and place it close to the swivel clasp's ring but not inside (it will be too bulky because of the seam). Stitch right on that seam (I stitched a square pattern on my strap) to close the loop and stitch your swivel clasp in place.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzaeyAg9_WRDLsVaSLNGfFNUknktPuzJtNZwqzoD0rs3IRrCm1DYwr3kk6gBeYcwHDLiOnnfdxy07pby4pED0flotMmrH5EI_NS6yV_jwWERp7mCcRQghR487LzIQG8Cu35xx7-mdc6q8X/s1600/IMG_6265.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzaeyAg9_WRDLsVaSLNGfFNUknktPuzJtNZwqzoD0rs3IRrCm1DYwr3kk6gBeYcwHDLiOnnfdxy07pby4pED0flotMmrH5EI_NS6yV_jwWERp7mCcRQghR487LzIQG8Cu35xx7-mdc6q8X/s320/IMG_6265.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
You're done! Now you just need to attach your D-ring strap to your project.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAVKnYbgKF-rKyEIzSCJlRXGKGyD9pe3DTEnE6f4Ww_u53QBHm2X7344OVvi8IJZN_YN9WMep9V20GW_OfUbQ3qY1l_EPPZifG54FUXJ370430HlTNsLMjthuuDzXMxmzbNqgN3jPKm0oP/s1600/IMG_6267.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="222" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAVKnYbgKF-rKyEIzSCJlRXGKGyD9pe3DTEnE6f4Ww_u53QBHm2X7344OVvi8IJZN_YN9WMep9V20GW_OfUbQ3qY1l_EPPZifG54FUXJ370430HlTNsLMjthuuDzXMxmzbNqgN3jPKm0oP/s320/IMG_6267.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>

My latest pattern, the Daisy Cross Body bag includes instructions for a magnetic snap closure and I decided to provide a free tutorial for a zipper closure.<br />
<br />
Before starting this tutorial, you will need to <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/234294318/new-the-daisy-cross-body-bag-pdf-sewing" target="_blank">purchase the pattern</a> and cut out all necessary pieces. In addition, you will need the following: <br />
<ul>
<li>a small piece of quilt weight cotton 1.75" H x 4" W for your zipper end casing</li>
<li>Cut (2) Lining Panel on fold in lightweight fusible interfacing </li>
<li>12" zipper (a longer zipper can be used and cut down)</li>
</ul>
When applying interfacing to the different pieces, also fuse the interfacing to the wrong side of each lining panel. (This means you do not need the piece of fusible meant to reinforce the interior zippered pocket.)<br />
<br />
You should go through the pattern as normal but when you get to the "Lining Assembly" section, do not stitch the inner bands and lining panels together. First, start by installing your zippered pocket and your slip pockets. You should also transfer your pleat marks to the wrong sides of your lining panels before continuing with this tutorial.<br />
<br />
To begin the zipper closure installation, prepare your zipper by adding a casing to the zipper end.<br />
<br />
1. Start by taking your casing fabric and fold it in half vertically. Press to create a crease.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh40yDXqI3mL0af32XMgfl48LVELIzvCxbWXlyij4o3s7FdhWTI2XFwUIIAJHzoWfa_H83oyzM-CMW3VZ8-UWUoh5ahA_-WfUiNcVvJrff_fMhpUWaBerhIbnON1rYQ0gQ5RtYUdmx6eCm6/s1600/IMG_6155.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="220" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh40yDXqI3mL0af32XMgfl48LVELIzvCxbWXlyij4o3s7FdhWTI2XFwUIIAJHzoWfa_H83oyzM-CMW3VZ8-UWUoh5ahA_-WfUiNcVvJrff_fMhpUWaBerhIbnON1rYQ0gQ5RtYUdmx6eCm6/s320/IMG_6155.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
2. Open up the casing and fold in both halves about 3/4" towards the crease, wrong sides together.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg06weT5p9PzdT3nZ2EevjNzVYYvXn6hBOKMkw2As51-UgDPTFDgy5w1xu_7HO9eIcUFol5SfQhAkTBTFwzjDzm38ovWUuiXDWv1StKCrNz49B4bI_EjHZb6luUAl5whFe3G32hgtYY5-5s/s1600/IMG_6156.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="278" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg06weT5p9PzdT3nZ2EevjNzVYYvXn6hBOKMkw2As51-UgDPTFDgy5w1xu_7HO9eIcUFol5SfQhAkTBTFwzjDzm38ovWUuiXDWv1StKCrNz49B4bI_EjHZb6luUAl5whFe3G32hgtYY5-5s/s320/IMG_6156.jpeg" width="320" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
3. Now fold in the top and bottom in towards the wrong side about 1/4".</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
6. Now take your 2 inner bands and your 2 lining panels with pockets already in place.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
7. Take one lining panel and pin your zipper along the top edge, both right side up. Make sure to fold under your zipper tape at the beginning of the zipper and pin in place approximately 1.5 inches from the left edge. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAL5OS4BtGNpyZD3lJG6tU4VS6A-F49yv8jgGst_hhWFCAcAK6sA64X2TulTMpndvjrSwZYDtYBV7LNiF45wBQYObWtpLijQWmPNxh4mAirs3HV4D9njFByg5wKlkTGnyvgU_lr8GV3VsY/s1600/IMG_6167.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAL5OS4BtGNpyZD3lJG6tU4VS6A-F49yv8jgGst_hhWFCAcAK6sA64X2TulTMpndvjrSwZYDtYBV7LNiF45wBQYObWtpLijQWmPNxh4mAirs3HV4D9njFByg5wKlkTGnyvgU_lr8GV3VsY/s320/IMG_6167.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
8. Do the same as the end with the zipper casing. You will want to pull your zipper away from the top edge approximately 1.5 inches from the right edge so that it will not be sewn into the seam. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

17. When doing your final bag assembly, everything is the same as instructed. Simply open the zipper closure as wide as it will go and insert your exterior shell inside.<br />

My latest pattern is the Daisy Cross Body bag. I wanted a mid-sized bag that included some patchwork and a different type of gusset. I also designed with the possibility of a zipper closure in mind since most prefer that type of closure.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg522qSnvVj_dSrRglcedyN_c5lfjmGWcdpJ7D7-brqQADvxUkwe1B7Q2eGlJ_XMLwb8oL4xzOChJvBC7OODN1UCSYseviOhp_8N7smfg9Z5xiH73NvE6P9SgGngePLQ2EgS6zGBelx_4Aj/s1600/IMG_6109.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="312" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg522qSnvVj_dSrRglcedyN_c5lfjmGWcdpJ7D7-brqQADvxUkwe1B7Q2eGlJ_XMLwb8oL4xzOChJvBC7OODN1UCSYseviOhp_8N7smfg9Z5xiH73NvE6P9SgGngePLQ2EgS6zGBelx_4Aj/s400/IMG_6109.jpeg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
The most remarkable part of this bag is clearly the dresden plate style patchwork. It does require a bit more time and effort to complete but I think it is well worth it in the end! The possibilities are endless and I've done a bit of fussy cutting for mine.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnpiP46RAidroG6V9Xi348O_fEEc48ZVH7F7MWfwJaFDLGidEDT78RY1pctioPPcp61vjaKrB6MjhCR0av6sJLLn6vwEXWQxT-A0IlN55oJ0axwul9BbqCmxOi53iAkwBd5gciPDEo_Neb/s1600/IMG_6143.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="305" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnpiP46RAidroG6V9Xi348O_fEEc48ZVH7F7MWfwJaFDLGidEDT78RY1pctioPPcp61vjaKrB6MjhCR0av6sJLLn6vwEXWQxT-A0IlN55oJ0axwul9BbqCmxOi53iAkwBd5gciPDEo_Neb/s400/IMG_6143.jpeg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
You can also omit the patchwork - especially if you wish to feature a fabric with a fabulous print.<br />

<br />
I do love bags with a gusset but wanted to make this one a little different. I decided to add 4 small pleats to the bottom of the main panels to give the bag even more depth. If you consider the pleats, the depth of this bag is about 7 inches!<br />
<br />
I had originally intended for double shoulder straps but after some feedback, I noticed a clear preference for a cross body strap (a personal must for me) so I quickly changed to an adjustable strap.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi34jsd-ZGFl4IvCMgP2eY1U17yropvkPiPfScFMSD_ztMi73VJlZ7uKg8X-gtHME9hDDjGkVYZzzk-MopSwl5MxIem8H8eauHOMGXI8TOfbk2WHWABGT2WZMg5buo_6H3ZBd4u96xmP9qo/s1600/IMG_6146.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi34jsd-ZGFl4IvCMgP2eY1U17yropvkPiPfScFMSD_ztMi73VJlZ7uKg8X-gtHME9hDDjGkVYZzzk-MopSwl5MxIem8H8eauHOMGXI8TOfbk2WHWABGT2WZMg5buo_6H3ZBd4u96xmP9qo/s400/IMG_6146.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I decided to create a simpler curve for the bottom of the interior top bands in case someone wanted to install a zipper closure instead of a magnetic snap closure. I did test it out and it worked well so I plan on publishing a free zipper closure tutorial in the near future.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
For the bag's interior, I did my usual configuration: 1 zippered pocket and 2 slip pockets. Apart from the different top bands, the construction of the lining shell is exactly the same as the exterior.<br />

This pattern is from Numbskull patterns and although they are no longer being sold, it is such a great bag that I wanted to review it regardless!<br />

<br />
I've made 2 Kentucky bags so far and although they take a while to sew, they are worth it in the end! There are a total of 4 zippered pocket in this bag. There are 2 exterior pockets: 1 under the flap and 1 on the back.<br />

<br />
And 2 additional zippered pockets inside the bag.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilGcT3xApnzzAEVD-tR64h2iuyiFHyIUYyBbDxZt-AIS0hN81X4a7xMlSyJikKyO4sEgOz61W0kRyO7uJuFSb3ixEob_DGv0w1ZgAxejJWvaldKTnJ_39p5qYV4nscPMPZh0lYoe5j99Q_/s1600/IMG_5763.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilGcT3xApnzzAEVD-tR64h2iuyiFHyIUYyBbDxZt-AIS0hN81X4a7xMlSyJikKyO4sEgOz61W0kRyO7uJuFSb3ixEob_DGv0w1ZgAxejJWvaldKTnJ_39p5qYV4nscPMPZh0lYoe5j99Q_/s1600/IMG_5763.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The exterior and interior shells are constructed exactly the same way except for the twist lock you add on one exterior zippered pocket. <br />
<br />
There are many pieces to cut, interface and assemble to put together all of these pockets. I really loved the accent strip on the bottom of the flap but I was not able to use faux leather as I wanted to with the first bag because it was way too bulky so I ended up using yarn dyed essex linen instead.<br />
<br />
With the 2nd bag, I figured out how to use faux leather. I just cut one strip of non-fraying faux leather and removed what would be the 1/2 inch seam allowance on the pattern piece and topstitched it to the bottom of the flap. It worked great and there was no bulk at the seams.<br />
<br />
The only thing I did not like about the bag is again the 1/2 inch seam allowance. This is a personal preference for me but I do not like having to watch that little mark on my sewing machine. I like to sew with a 3/8 inch seam allowance - which is essentially the edge of my presser foot - because I can then focus on the quality of my stitching.<br />
<br />
This is also not an inexpensive bag to make. The cost of 4 zippers plus the twist lock and metal hardware for the strap and all of the interfacing used makes this a more expensive project. But again, the results are worth it!<br />

I had a little burst of popularity with my caravan totes so I was very busy sewing and then I got inspired to create a new pattern. This bag is a bit classier than my usual style but when I get an idea, I just have to create!<br />
<br />
Introducing the Rose Gathered Handbag:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6kXcaFewPlna00dE0pRpP0S2skWf2-fMpmJzl0dgxc74vT8We0FGFAolf1NG72zasJn4WackZASz9ukI6TXIhSn8KTjfRxUX42EYRz9F9XqcVnwaOeFbsKJfpb5CiOij4jukprYThmd-M/s1600/IMG_3616.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6kXcaFewPlna00dE0pRpP0S2skWf2-fMpmJzl0dgxc74vT8We0FGFAolf1NG72zasJn4WackZASz9ukI6TXIhSn8KTjfRxUX42EYRz9F9XqcVnwaOeFbsKJfpb5CiOij4jukprYThmd-M/s1600/IMG_3616.jpeg" height="400" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
This bag is entirely made from woven fabrics with a focus center panel and coordinating side panels. Both sides of the bag look the same. There is a flap to which you can add either a magnetic snap or twist lock closure depending on your preference.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkYO_3rY7wRUZfnlVXtDG_ZKHWvLxaDTqTN92tXBBzIVVXtcdLDbz-E6EC3dizDsCW2ypEr_sabsnTdSNJnRWkaWnEUKnFHC7KVOl9XP7RV2hg86EXPpg8U5Tk38r3J2hHXQ_CcBvWKA10/s1600/IMG_3614.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkYO_3rY7wRUZfnlVXtDG_ZKHWvLxaDTqTN92tXBBzIVVXtcdLDbz-E6EC3dizDsCW2ypEr_sabsnTdSNJnRWkaWnEUKnFHC7KVOl9XP7RV2hg86EXPpg8U5Tk38r3J2hHXQ_CcBvWKA10/s1600/IMG_3614.jpeg" height="400" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
To give the bag some depth, I decided on a pleated bottom style with a total of 8 pleats. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEZrYj-6ubELaSuWaco5oGvrA9c4giQI_ePfy2UdfrEbZscdtedP86VHzK4gV-yhuKN702t9tgduM0uMQ-zB0vOoXyUXaCWBfxWHDutoCXI81DCWhR466fEVU_wmN7Fg_PIyEYs9dligd9/s1600/IMG_5715.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEZrYj-6ubELaSuWaco5oGvrA9c4giQI_ePfy2UdfrEbZscdtedP86VHzK4gV-yhuKN702t9tgduM0uMQ-zB0vOoXyUXaCWBfxWHDutoCXI81DCWhR466fEVU_wmN7Fg_PIyEYs9dligd9/s1600/IMG_5715.jpeg" height="400" width="266" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
On the sides of the bag, I created some channels and added some fabric ties which can be tied into bows or just knots - again, your personal preference!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdMwCuJwWrcVXaxkI0cN1hJ0C-Q_nlh_SbFv5gj0W-iUkTojiNkDG9TahKSoMGZYzthxDHMp8f-fC2pXi-2ZFKz6iLMQa7A1eF4JjCWrswEvUpbxTkwUYdtcXXJxNm9KHrMgyPKRx7kYqe/s1600/IMG_5716.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdMwCuJwWrcVXaxkI0cN1hJ0C-Q_nlh_SbFv5gj0W-iUkTojiNkDG9TahKSoMGZYzthxDHMp8f-fC2pXi-2ZFKz6iLMQa7A1eF4JjCWrswEvUpbxTkwUYdtcXXJxNm9KHrMgyPKRx7kYqe/s1600/IMG_5716.jpeg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
On the inside, I included instructions for my favourite pocket configuration: 3 slip pockets and 1 zippered pocket. <br />
<br />
There is no limit to what you can do in terms of fabric combinations, types of fabric. One of my testers, <a href="http://rockbabyscissors.weebly.com/index.html" target="_blank">Rock Baby Scissors</a>, decided to do a lovely rainbow patchwork for the center panel!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEQMC3jZ1PvTNvTPvoThbKawfesik0KsPbjydcFHZkVRWB_J1VLUmIWF2_P6vWM9svp8QdSWi4UF5TcIRc56lAL778hA83LUZqlYqo2QVdUG4sGdg1Bydm7MoAhNet_nc8YNy2iJdv6qRg/s1600/icm_fullxfull.58710809_kzpnmuisiog80c0wks0c.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEQMC3jZ1PvTNvTPvoThbKawfesik0KsPbjydcFHZkVRWB_J1VLUmIWF2_P6vWM9svp8QdSWi4UF5TcIRc56lAL778hA83LUZqlYqo2QVdUG4sGdg1Bydm7MoAhNet_nc8YNy2iJdv6qRg/s1600/icm_fullxfull.58710809_kzpnmuisiog80c0wks0c.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>

I have thought about designing a tote bag pattern many times but was never really inspired by an idea. I immediately loved the look of this tote bag and decided to give it a try!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2tiJvjfStReeDMU0z4tdvKms-UyuT1eew1w1s8MrmEN9QcVyl-OntOSrh-Bcr1QDrz_EmqDNLKPMCXtKdjdqMc85WgTWCxX2QV0R77RNzSy32_zOG9c6qRPuAr7y0CS_-1hyaiew70VEe/s1600/IMG_4832.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2tiJvjfStReeDMU0z4tdvKms-UyuT1eew1w1s8MrmEN9QcVyl-OntOSrh-Bcr1QDrz_EmqDNLKPMCXtKdjdqMc85WgTWCxX2QV0R77RNzSy32_zOG9c6qRPuAr7y0CS_-1hyaiew70VEe/s1600/IMG_4832.jpg" height="400" width="281" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Like all patterns by Noodlehead, the instructions were clear and easy to follow. Although the pattern piece dimensions were provided, I am lazy and prefer to print out the pieces and cut my fabric that way.<br />
<br />
However, I did make some modifications because I was missing some notions. I didn't have a 14 inch metal zipper and I thought that the metal zipper in her photos really improved the appearance of the bag. So I ended up using a 12 inch zipper and just increased the width of the zipper tabs. It worked out perfectly!<br />
<br />
I also didn't have size 24 snaps so I ended up using some of my cowgirl snaps. They aren't as prominent on the flap but I like that I can match them with the fabrics I used. <br />
<br />
I also decided on using real leather for the straps AND I added a leather rectangle to the bottom of the bag. I like to set my bag down and I don't like doing that with fabric bags - they get dirty so quickly! So I stitched up the bottom seam first, pressed the seam open and then stitched on a leather rectangle that matched my straps. I then continued sewing the sides and corners of the bag.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZxns9a_2bfMvVDssZkQ6eYtAA4uHRbWEZmh5ozSC0uSD3VN3sOcgBLVd30s4YRop0akqdXeEiSH-8d3EbfloYRD33-34rgGWbm77WtxiHjHKTQ0lUPmRSgXFqPp72YejARMzFIcKWcvCn/s1600/IMG_4938.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZxns9a_2bfMvVDssZkQ6eYtAA4uHRbWEZmh5ozSC0uSD3VN3sOcgBLVd30s4YRop0akqdXeEiSH-8d3EbfloYRD33-34rgGWbm77WtxiHjHKTQ0lUPmRSgXFqPp72YejARMzFIcKWcvCn/s1600/IMG_4938.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I ended up adding an additional slip pocket inside the bag. It seemed like such a shame that a large bag would only have one slip pocket so my tote has 2.<br />

<br />
This bag sews up fairly quickly and it is quite easy to make. The only thing I didn't care for (and this is just my personal preference) was the 1/2 inch seam allowance. I really prefer a 3/8 inch seam allowance because it is so much easier to follow the edge of your presser foot rather than follow a guide line. Again, maybe just laziness on my part!<br />
<br />
I plan on making more of these beautiful tote bags! I don't currently carry tote bags in my Etsy shop and my customers seem to really love this design. <br />

In one of my latest patterns - the Zinnia bag - I provide instructions on how to sew faux leather straps. I thought that sharing my technique would be extremely helpful as I get so many questions about sewing with faux leather.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
With the right tools, you do not need to be afraid of faux leather! My one recommendation is this: get a walking foot attachment for your sewing machine. You will not regret it. I realize they are expensive but I have used my walking foot in so many projects now, it has paid itself off time and time again. It is not just for quilting. It deals with sticky materials such as vinyl and faux leather much better than a teflon foot. It also sews PUL, ProCare and Ripstop nylon beautifully!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Without further delay, here are my instructions for the faux leather strap taken directly from my <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/217616107/new-the-zinnia-zippered-panel-bag-pdf" target="_blank">Zinnia sewing pattern</a>. These instructions are for shoulder straps but you can apply the same technique if you are making a longer adjustable cross body strap.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Start by cutting out your faux leather. You will need:</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li>(4) pieces faux leather 22 inches W x 2 inches H</li>
<li>(4) pieces faux leather 5 inches W x 2 inches H</li>
</ul>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
You will also need (4) 1-inch O rings - 2 for each shoulder strap.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Take one of the shorter strap pieces and draw a line through the centre horizontally.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghxhfXbCuhv4yq6cMOsmuS5sIZr1xp6h00n533L0Vn9LWoaxDAUZoEHFZLiPEWV1TOA6xPloMM2QJ-BVjhg-NA4ChTT7nalkA38DIY3HOqvKdHFtwBDG0XfFxcGC1ngd5w_F60ffJotlMp/s1600/IMG_3731.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghxhfXbCuhv4yq6cMOsmuS5sIZr1xp6h00n533L0Vn9LWoaxDAUZoEHFZLiPEWV1TOA6xPloMM2QJ-BVjhg-NA4ChTT7nalkA38DIY3HOqvKdHFtwBDG0XfFxcGC1ngd5w_F60ffJotlMp/s1600/IMG_3731.jpg" height="266" width="400" /> </a></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Now fold in one half of the strap piece in towards the centre line you just drew and sew it</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
in place. Keep folding and sewing as you go until you’ve sewn that whole side.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOk1IZQsXUwGMpq3XZWjV9FSlnLs857Xe1ZszWii99nf2qTKc6SXjC_rw0cjHo4ClaTxjCOnGBUqIUWE3sJktl6AkdCwR5dB7936yEx2oRkmeVDo17b9gAjhvCNER_wMWQIspbG5o7q4yB/s1600/IMG_3732.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOk1IZQsXUwGMpq3XZWjV9FSlnLs857Xe1ZszWii99nf2qTKc6SXjC_rw0cjHo4ClaTxjCOnGBUqIUWE3sJktl6AkdCwR5dB7936yEx2oRkmeVDo17b9gAjhvCNER_wMWQIspbG5o7q4yB/s1600/IMG_3732.jpg" height="266" width="400" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Do the same for the other side. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAY6j-ESInRSo-kw_Tds52bbIcwg4_aq66JpzhZt7rAQUw7cQkR-FBpVxQTWufdRTkJIeSoK-TAzjCOjJXIA25U2uJVmcaGeH-iR_EuV0pLaU4YFmzSwXq-bBxrXb8reL6CgwlxyGLrEjm/s1600/IMG_3733.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAY6j-ESInRSo-kw_Tds52bbIcwg4_aq66JpzhZt7rAQUw7cQkR-FBpVxQTWufdRTkJIeSoK-TAzjCOjJXIA25U2uJVmcaGeH-iR_EuV0pLaU4YFmzSwXq-bBxrXb8reL6CgwlxyGLrEjm/s1600/IMG_3733.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now pass the piece of strap through one of the O-rings and sew both ends together.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdJ4u4FeHAQu09kAMaBb1E7inAJ1THTxmW-HP3rvali7olK0JBm-kBUSPRKZvCeLEG2S1ry42fiU7Dk8hVlifsQjpvsbiW1dXvBEOXfQpo56qTs0ljsPrlj6UeiUrco-NfV20qqKzCk9PZ/s1600/IMG_3735.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdJ4u4FeHAQu09kAMaBb1E7inAJ1THTxmW-HP3rvali7olK0JBm-kBUSPRKZvCeLEG2S1ry42fiU7Dk8hVlifsQjpvsbiW1dXvBEOXfQpo56qTs0ljsPrlj6UeiUrco-NfV20qqKzCk9PZ/s1600/IMG_3735.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Repeat steps 1-4 for the other 3 short strap pieces. Now take 2 of the longer faux leather strap pieces and draw a horizontal line through the centre of the strap.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBWLxDJMnmSAQG1EgpKbAzEYEDyG6bdJaEfmWUBt0897uF625-946MIyvRj28dW1E2Kq64UHLl7ICNflokhODAd2Q5dotRj_rPJV4L30-sV3UWiopGGeWKxgC1ARuRJMYYRrhDcmz6dhmm/s1600/IMG_3754.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBWLxDJMnmSAQG1EgpKbAzEYEDyG6bdJaEfmWUBt0897uF625-946MIyvRj28dW1E2Kq64UHLl7ICNflokhODAd2Q5dotRj_rPJV4L30-sV3UWiopGGeWKxgC1ARuRJMYYRrhDcmz6dhmm/s1600/IMG_3754.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now take the 2 pieces and sew the short ends RST.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqbEy5smVGgpD8yyjJdC9CZF5WcOjN3WdEX4fX8YlcGHyvgAJUKd-7_cyj3GX8e4WcRqYXhNlIGy-eysfIgMsrcxSCkrQd5YvyGeB49PakViUiC29yTpaxgk0riQYgf45OKVuS9gzDHw0N/s1600/IMG_3755.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqbEy5smVGgpD8yyjJdC9CZF5WcOjN3WdEX4fX8YlcGHyvgAJUKd-7_cyj3GX8e4WcRqYXhNlIGy-eysfIgMsrcxSCkrQd5YvyGeB49PakViUiC29yTpaxgk0riQYgf45OKVuS9gzDHw0N/s1600/IMG_3755.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Open up the seam you just sewed and topstitch the seam allowance down on both sides.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMQM20UMjH5XVdZxywemw42RmBzt3prFVC4wc4o4OVjJPtvpvswNbRx_usPYp9zGlJrrKi7ZMR0_zfHlwXdcAWIq6Of9zNuUfXW7gdnpxuAmeJm2AKiCi7VYiB8XMgm1voje6QdgHTq3GQ/s1600/IMG_3756.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMQM20UMjH5XVdZxywemw42RmBzt3prFVC4wc4o4OVjJPtvpvswNbRx_usPYp9zGlJrrKi7ZMR0_zfHlwXdcAWIq6Of9zNuUfXW7gdnpxuAmeJm2AKiCi7VYiB8XMgm1voje6QdgHTq3GQ/s1600/IMG_3756.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Now pass that strap piece through 2 of the O-rings with the shorter strap pieces you</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
created in steps 1-4.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Sew together the other 2 short strap ends RST. Once again, sew down the seam</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
allowance on both sides of the 2nd seam.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUw-x-UYZKE8M3412IpKdVq6zkp9jjrTGR7CwgN4YYb2RmEeA5gz7EcXV96y-5AfRzjX9jrDqHJ7PHGr7lerBAPXTS_QWNa2fIJLD9n1-twBUcVblNEg5WKvdK9vTlF8GapY1ojldALoFp/s1600/IMG_3758.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUw-x-UYZKE8M3412IpKdVq6zkp9jjrTGR7CwgN4YYb2RmEeA5gz7EcXV96y-5AfRzjX9jrDqHJ7PHGr7lerBAPXTS_QWNa2fIJLD9n1-twBUcVblNEg5WKvdK9vTlF8GapY1ojldALoFp/s1600/IMG_3758.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br />
Like you did for the short strap pieces, you need to sew down one half of the strap</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
towards the centre line you drew. You will need to move the O-rings as required as you</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
are sewing. Sew down the other half also.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiajZ7lv90-lDML0fAdO6qrFhBMChxSq9MWLb005xB7idEOnwnMvItq8cjpLy3j7SevtqeA7o1OaRkJRK8Omio4drTMRcR4KqhPgPpFdGbVtIPtGobueeXf5t-pXaADpmn5C2g36qsD19VR/s1600/IMG_3760.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiajZ7lv90-lDML0fAdO6qrFhBMChxSq9MWLb005xB7idEOnwnMvItq8cjpLy3j7SevtqeA7o1OaRkJRK8Omio4drTMRcR4KqhPgPpFdGbVtIPtGobueeXf5t-pXaADpmn5C2g36qsD19VR/s1600/IMG_3760.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMkOE8Qy-69WXse6OpMfAOJlNRaMoMO4Bs8UIW8546-8nY6xoSJkeAruSYV_Jf-XDf1xJhnRVorAlggMGpARzez32LeaeYXh6LJKisvLzGozq-XKS3xDWHcvBLW25evHPDJFzUqZOQ1lcY/s1600/IMG_3761.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMkOE8Qy-69WXse6OpMfAOJlNRaMoMO4Bs8UIW8546-8nY6xoSJkeAruSYV_Jf-XDf1xJhnRVorAlggMGpARzez32LeaeYXh6LJKisvLzGozq-XKS3xDWHcvBLW25evHPDJFzUqZOQ1lcY/s1600/IMG_3761.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Now you should have one long strap loop. Place your O-rings at opposite ends of the</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
loop (I place them at the seams on the strap) and then clip the 2 sections of strap together</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
to keep them in place.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1XN9sgerHzmzGYZabzhhJuaXhHegMGXl-ZsyfH-Iol5L078NNsJUrwVcURF5nxZhyGpzQmypEq5Rxst8ggdclAAq7v5O4iHkjMBbiVy0dVLfISJW89rsnys7P615f1elkdSfQHRly0bc4/s1600/IMG_3765.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1XN9sgerHzmzGYZabzhhJuaXhHegMGXl-ZsyfH-Iol5L078NNsJUrwVcURF5nxZhyGpzQmypEq5Rxst8ggdclAAq7v5O4iHkjMBbiVy0dVLfISJW89rsnys7P615f1elkdSfQHRly0bc4/s1600/IMG_3765.jpg" height="640" width="426" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Now you are going to sew the strap halves together to create one strap with 4 thicknesses</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
of faux leather and the open section sandwiched inside. You will sew one rectangular</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
shaped seam with a 1/8” seam allowance.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZ_hyYx0ySrA-NItJgqDPnLHaGsA6DKTndCAf1IrKvJEHWG5y4O3L_rASY1ozz4v4_suRoZJkmWKm74yUWZUf38lT-B3TY7RpTyKYCZol9d6yp8WvJfy6Vg1rb72UHjU4F1WEjmIlIdWP9/s1600/IMG_3766.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZ_hyYx0ySrA-NItJgqDPnLHaGsA6DKTndCAf1IrKvJEHWG5y4O3L_rASY1ozz4v4_suRoZJkmWKm74yUWZUf38lT-B3TY7RpTyKYCZol9d6yp8WvJfy6Vg1rb72UHjU4F1WEjmIlIdWP9/s1600/IMG_3766.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgl9dEygECggG_pIyJO8xDydb0yc22nipiBZQfqPa0XhIhoDK8ADgH1qwJgA7zYr5g9PYudi9vJbiV6qrNSKW9iJ7r3x0eGhsdK5Oa6JUzdDXwfaMNuz_MOdGgxedeqchitx7Vc4TAggtRk/s1600/IMG_3767.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgl9dEygECggG_pIyJO8xDydb0yc22nipiBZQfqPa0XhIhoDK8ADgH1qwJgA7zYr5g9PYudi9vJbiV6qrNSKW9iJ7r3x0eGhsdK5Oa6JUzdDXwfaMNuz_MOdGgxedeqchitx7Vc4TAggtRk/s1600/IMG_3767.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
You should end up with a strap that looks like this with 4 lines of stitching:</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_DEdbMFjzemdQSvqtn-XkE3e4NO0LH7H3TfQucBMrwFsfDxTx3NS6ifFK2zFYLvJTmmdUZMpmjUQySKEaEP2FW2dSrOIjon2LtElcE56Vioy-ox5Co6YOtiKeKUC_Y7UCzTh700IL8CTr/s1600/IMG_3768.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_DEdbMFjzemdQSvqtn-XkE3e4NO0LH7H3TfQucBMrwFsfDxTx3NS6ifFK2zFYLvJTmmdUZMpmjUQySKEaEP2FW2dSrOIjon2LtElcE56Vioy-ox5Co6YOtiKeKUC_Y7UCzTh700IL8CTr/s1600/IMG_3768.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Repeat the same steps to create a second strap and you are done! You just need to sew them onto your bag. To attach your straps to your bag, you need to measure equal distance from the outer</div>

We are doing a small renovation in the house and there are some birthdays to celebrate which means less sewing time.<br />
<br />
I have been sketching messenger bag ideas for a very long time now. I get started on some ideas and then I see a very cool bag online and I get discouraged. It's all part of the creative process right?<br />
<br />
But I finally settled on something and came up with this:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi06nOxpQUsKbFuKvv1jrO8GZyRr0ypD8YlBuYo768FIE-vz4bPtYOg0zaYGrsY8Pzj8KkDbulJPK5G7VK6pxDFvGCO7O-R8fbyYEz-pppsYJ0kaBMvgLpuPj_3cIoCUyOIlNFsb4ctVxxx/s1600/IMG_4542.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi06nOxpQUsKbFuKvv1jrO8GZyRr0ypD8YlBuYo768FIE-vz4bPtYOg0zaYGrsY8Pzj8KkDbulJPK5G7VK6pxDFvGCO7O-R8fbyYEz-pppsYJ0kaBMvgLpuPj_3cIoCUyOIlNFsb4ctVxxx/s1600/IMG_4542.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I don't have a "flowery" themed name yet but I have a lot of pictures and details! For the outside, I pieced together some dark grey faux leather and a beautiful Tula Pink print for the front of the flap. I added some piping to the flap - which I NEVER do - and I really like that special classy feel it gives the bag. I used my usual swivel clasp closure which I really prefer instead of a magnetic snap because I find the snaps less forgiving if your bag is empty/full.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaHFiTBlTgrPtgaO907vsHxPVfj2GMcR2QAcu_AfCJb_lU6TsadlE4dqc77u7qVxKO8HDFLFSdaKGuJHpbr9KRavs8rhY18BWuQaKREKu5CCIqA52BfZeE7iEtd-O1mn9aTI8wmM71_VVk/s1600/IMG_4543.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaHFiTBlTgrPtgaO907vsHxPVfj2GMcR2QAcu_AfCJb_lU6TsadlE4dqc77u7qVxKO8HDFLFSdaKGuJHpbr9KRavs8rhY18BWuQaKREKu5CCIqA52BfZeE7iEtd-O1mn9aTI8wmM71_VVk/s1600/IMG_4543.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
This bag has a gusset. Meaning I didn't miter the corners on this one. It has a few more pieces to assemble but I think it will be easier to sew for those who don't have very powerful sewing machines because it means less bulky seams like you sometimes find at side seams. It also means the strap rings can be sewn like this:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEib3PL4FRCepZ17Uk7D6IIx3O9woeEN0elP0tjrn1iJuuWB5bYfOl4gunhH9l7BbLVN8atB19OIeMn8ODiqwK4swHaBEHqSeaJpLKYYk5U6L6z_YtJXlg80o5lBOowk4XKpgC8pZlx27fpo/s1600/IMG_4544.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEib3PL4FRCepZ17Uk7D6IIx3O9woeEN0elP0tjrn1iJuuWB5bYfOl4gunhH9l7BbLVN8atB19OIeMn8ODiqwK4swHaBEHqSeaJpLKYYk5U6L6z_YtJXlg80o5lBOowk4XKpgC8pZlx27fpo/s1600/IMG_4544.jpg" height="640" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
And I know for some the bulk of straps at the ends on top of side seams is VERY tough for some machines. <br />
<br />
As you can see, I used a heavy cotton webbing for the strap. I used to hesitate using webbing because it frays but once you figure out casings for strap ends (which I think are a great touch!), you end up with some durable and pretty straps. Not to mention a lot less time consuming than making your own straps!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaAcdljihALRr6rcmFMgD1XBdtyGXgj7UW9Zaqb3So-R2uQLUKCp7h9Jjo2c_9fsNZkg_rVH8LZByyY8TPZzNxWeKrRRqYY867ptbmxtidvlw-m224tPAm9rFZgRtkyRsWT4j54NuUASsq/s1600/IMG_4546.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaAcdljihALRr6rcmFMgD1XBdtyGXgj7UW9Zaqb3So-R2uQLUKCp7h9Jjo2c_9fsNZkg_rVH8LZByyY8TPZzNxWeKrRRqYY867ptbmxtidvlw-m224tPAm9rFZgRtkyRsWT4j54NuUASsq/s1600/IMG_4546.jpg" height="266" width="400" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
Under the flap, I have 2 pen slip pockets and 2 smaller
slip pockets. The slip pockets are the perfect size for smart phones,
small notebooks. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMwqWeEsPiNw5c4BBRrSvUY2o9aDOoRFJ_2x6m7pZY8Y9aEmE_q1SyyL2ZDjffmM9KATmrqf8aJef29Lb4-w9aVOQixo0k60KBUlPu0TuCdOpBCG9GhJ2QLhPP-9HTukud-6FwWERLp_3o/s1600/IMG_4547.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMwqWeEsPiNw5c4BBRrSvUY2o9aDOoRFJ_2x6m7pZY8Y9aEmE_q1SyyL2ZDjffmM9KATmrqf8aJef29Lb4-w9aVOQixo0k60KBUlPu0TuCdOpBCG9GhJ2QLhPP-9HTukud-6FwWERLp_3o/s1600/IMG_4547.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Inside the bag I have the following:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>A large padded, structure compartment for your iPad</li>
<li>1 zippered pocket for valuables</li>
<li>2 large slip pockets</li>
<li>And of course a large main compartment for notebooks, water bottles, etc. It will fit regular sheets of paper.</li>
</ul>
Measurements for the bag are:<br />
<br />
Width: 12.5 inches<br />
Height: 9.25 inches<br />
Depth: just under 3 inches<br />
<br />
I think this bag will be suitable for beginners with some sewing experience since nothing is very difficult. It will just be a longer project because of all the pockets to sew.<br />
<br />
Look for this new pattern to arrive before the end of February!<br />

Sometimes I get inspired for a pattern of my own or I learn about a new technique. I make sure to never copy someone else's work. I know the time and effort that goes into coming up with a new design, drafting pattern pieces, sewing sample bags, photographing, writing the PDF. It is time consuming!<br />
<br />
I recently tried out the India Hobo Bag. I was looking for a larger bag for myself because I do tend to carry small to medium sized bags and they tend to get a little stuffed. I was so pleased by how easily this bag sews that I made a few for my <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/bluecalla?section_id=8052196" target="_blank">Etsy shop</a>. The pieces just seem to line up perfectly when sewing!<br />

<br />
<br />
This pattern allows you to make hobo bags in 2 different sizes. I only made the large size but I could see the smaller size being very roomy as well. There are 2 very large open pockets on the outside and I made another one of those large pockets on the inside plus a zippered pocket. You could make it with 4 open pockets AND a zippered pocket but I chose to leave more space on the inside. <br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
There are so many possibilities for this bag in terms of fabric and pattern placement. I used a patterned linen on the underside of one strap and I thought it was a very nice touch. The strap itself is really nice and wide so if you're carrying heavy items, it will definitely be more comfortable. The strap length is not adjustable and I did find it was a bit low on my body (I am 5'6") so it may be not ideal for shorter folks but that really is personal preference.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Beautiful feather print on the underside of the strap!</td></tr>

<br />
<br />
This is not a stiff bag. It is definitely meant to be slouchy! I think it could be made stiffer but would not look quite right. I just interfaced with duck canvas which resulted in the perfect amount of stiffness and structure. I tried a variety of exterior fabrics: faux leather, denim, linen. They all worked out without any issues!<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Faux leather option!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<b>What would I change about this bag?</b> I think I need some kind of closure for the top. Probably just a magnetic snap or a button/loop closure would do the trick but when it sort of just hangs open, I get worried that things will fall out. Other than that, I love this bag!<br />

<br />
This is a fabulous bag because it can be worn 3 different ways: over one shoulder, across the body AND as a belt bag. A couple of years ago, I did have something similar in my shop and for some strange reason (I always do this!), I stopped making it. But here is a new version and hopefully it will appeal to all the sewers out there!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLLWPiTzpOkrcDwZKwh-oRrfJ7v0K3O7evIdTGZsTBdmOIzTtZ7r6cMXvWZE8fvBAuzMpWB8VHc2xa45It6zq7leaeTfsrreOcSIhmcdZSR5WB8sn8SHW55ZF_MVOLC01bp8lyv-PA-5W3/s1600/IMG_4058.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLLWPiTzpOkrcDwZKwh-oRrfJ7v0K3O7evIdTGZsTBdmOIzTtZ7r6cMXvWZE8fvBAuzMpWB8VHc2xa45It6zq7leaeTfsrreOcSIhmcdZSR5WB8sn8SHW55ZF_MVOLC01bp8lyv-PA-5W3/s1600/IMG_4058.jpg" height="385" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The dimensions of this bag are 9 inches wide and about 6.5 inches high. I used faux leather to accent this bag but again, this is completely optional and for the pattern instructions, I will stick to using fabric only. <br />
<br />
The bag has a flap and magnetic snap closure and there is a main focus fabric and an accent fabric along the bottom. I am hoping to make some variations of this and include them in the pattern. I think it's always good to give folks a lot of ideas for inspiration.<br />
<br />
Under the flap on the outside, there are 2 slip pockets. One is a great size for a smart phone (iPhone 6 is pictured below) and the other could fit keys, lip balm, etc.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIsZFny1IazQKjhE2coaOJ3bOwwF3fg4qW9QKSjUaJCpETd4rQDqonFRIVsJzmFABnyax2GTJm9tulBOXzt7DLw1RFPj7hXHSR2GNvERXSbLRWQXeFiJML3ZlAOVzJmTBYEDpbI2oiWpPk/s1600/IMG_4062.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIsZFny1IazQKjhE2coaOJ3bOwwF3fg4qW9QKSjUaJCpETd4rQDqonFRIVsJzmFABnyax2GTJm9tulBOXzt7DLw1RFPj7hXHSR2GNvERXSbLRWQXeFiJML3ZlAOVzJmTBYEDpbI2oiWpPk/s1600/IMG_4062.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
On the inside, there is the main compartment and one zippered pocket to store valuables.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnLUZSJYDoZROuAxkequ8XcEIhYEHB2fdUg1-EAcnG5VdR7yLr6ohOGoepNWX2FApmnqLjfJh2gyWHy-Y77nl7sQ3912MpMCnmQfgw7kCak2rXqhc6I0dq0zOEVDAV8modCuxu9l9arO6p/s1600/IMG_4064.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnLUZSJYDoZROuAxkequ8XcEIhYEHB2fdUg1-EAcnG5VdR7yLr6ohOGoepNWX2FApmnqLjfJh2gyWHy-Y77nl7sQ3912MpMCnmQfgw7kCak2rXqhc6I0dq0zOEVDAV8modCuxu9l9arO6p/s1600/IMG_4064.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I will also try to come up with a formula to figure out the appropriate size for the strap so that it fits around a person's waist. It is hard to come up with a length that will work for everyone so I think a formula would be most helpful.<br />
<br />
I can really see this as a great travel bag because you can be hands free and still carry your essentials. I believe this bag could also accommodate most full size wallets! <br />
<br />
I will sew up a few more samples along with the pattern sample bag and keep everyone updated on its progress. I am hoping to get Mr Blue Calla's help taking photos of the bag worn the 3 different ways as well.<br />

I am quite proud of having listed this new pattern yesterday - only 7 days into the new year!<br />
<br />
Before I started working on this pattern, I had already created a few bags in this design. Some by custom request and others just for fun. Here are a few example bags I have made to give you an idea of the possibilities:<br />

A few notes about this pattern:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>I do find this pattern to be a bit more of a challenge due to the variations as well as the zippered closure. I would recommend some experience with sewing zippers before attempting this pattern</li>
<li>The use of faux leather is completely optional however if you do choose to use it, I highly recommend a walking foot. I have tried a roller foot and a teflon foot but honestly, nothing works better than a walking foot! </li>
<li>I've used cotton webbing to make the adjustable strap. If you don't have any on hand, you can make your own strap. I don't have a tutorial ready but I'm certain you could easily find one online. </li>
</ul>
If you'd like to try out the Zinnia pattern, you can find it in my <a href="http://bluecallapatterns.etsy.com/" target="_blank">pattern shop</a> on Etsy. Introducing The Zinnia Zippered Pleated Bag:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirAuKguoBVS5kcoxeCHGUZ15pTfEBayyKPxezQqVQ6ha5XFI2lJxKw_2mPn09xd2BS2ogBvvWHhjbJuzJjN_gX7cOjxRO8KeER97Q7xUiHBV-2bEOeIBm0OTezpiA2fiXEr39mB232pp3A/s1600/IMG_3826.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirAuKguoBVS5kcoxeCHGUZ15pTfEBayyKPxezQqVQ6ha5XFI2lJxKw_2mPn09xd2BS2ogBvvWHhjbJuzJjN_gX7cOjxRO8KeER97Q7xUiHBV-2bEOeIBm0OTezpiA2fiXEr39mB232pp3A/s1600/IMG_3826.jpeg" height="400" width="301" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The exterior of this bag is made completely from faux leather. I used 2 coordinating patterns: one solid pebbled chocolate brown for the pleated sides and a heavy pebbled tan with chocolate brown spots for the middle panel and the top band. Keep in mind though - this bag CAN be made in a different fabric other than faux leather. Canvas, denim, home decor weight. These are all great choices. However if you do choose to use faux leather, I am strongly recommending either a walking foot or a teflon foot (best investment I ever made was my walking foot!!!). Otherwise, this bag could be very difficult to sew properly. </div>

<br />
I used double straps for this bag and I've given instructions on how to sew faux leather straps a whole new way which I believe is better than before. <br />
<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfEO3WAQRK12TGhirpuBKVsgtYfNnAeDwHZvlJX4s6fGeAkFCiYlBJ9vByxNFGsfww99zsD1R-BKzMJS2VgJQ4brZvPYfDjkX_cSuRSt1Er9J0tEmTU_4DwiCVFWjY3SwRrah6XtouY6Sc/s1600/IMG_3836.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfEO3WAQRK12TGhirpuBKVsgtYfNnAeDwHZvlJX4s6fGeAkFCiYlBJ9vByxNFGsfww99zsD1R-BKzMJS2VgJQ4brZvPYfDjkX_cSuRSt1Er9J0tEmTU_4DwiCVFWjY3SwRrah6XtouY6Sc/s1600/IMG_3836.jpg" height="224" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
This will also be my first pattern with a zippered closure. I did realize when I was adding the pull tab to the end of the zipper that I had used the wrong size. It did not affect the way the zipper works at all but made the "open wide" feature I had intended a little less "wide".<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5N67n5XJ_nXinxnGsfDmm0SouFfJBPdmdz37WhnONNAzkePaDX8VgP_TcpNkatPK8k91t1ga8CF-nXI30MgnBWl4e_yEBY4BFfpb-HVqswTPDd-OXKnw6dR8hSIDBzTpewo7NDjkwDJl1/s1600/IMG_3840.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5N67n5XJ_nXinxnGsfDmm0SouFfJBPdmdz37WhnONNAzkePaDX8VgP_TcpNkatPK8k91t1ga8CF-nXI30MgnBWl4e_yEBY4BFfpb-HVqswTPDd-OXKnw6dR8hSIDBzTpewo7NDjkwDJl1/s1600/IMG_3840.jpeg" height="266" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
But wait. I am not done yet! This pattern will also include instructions for an alternate version of this bag made in fabric with a faux leather bottom and adjustable cross body strap. I will be splitting the instructions in separate files so that you can mix and match features to make it exactly the bag YOU want.<br />
<br />
I will be posting another update with the alternate bag version very soon. Stay tuned!Blue Calla - Celinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15384361616710568199noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3572484891333244684.post-2414045178834682112015-01-01T05:07:00.000-08:002015-01-01T05:07:14.397-08:00Happy New Year!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

This time the choice was easy as I've had so much interest in this next bag along with many requests for a zippered bag. I have not chosen a name yet but this is on my to do list:<br />

<br />
I will also be including 2 strap options: double shoulder straps or a cross body strap. You will be able to add both if you prefer! I am hoping to give clear instructions for the faux leather shoulder straps and I am even contemplating an instructional video!<br />
<br />
This bag will come with a zippered closure but I am still trying out various methods of constructing this to find the easiest method for most sewers. I am leaning in the direction of a wide open zippered opening because it is the best method for getting those cross body straps in place.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVot1QFmFNnDOdyBZrQilgmkBD9T3ubJMsc3MGn9X5ViEXBtsbs5h8h-eqCy7RD0uwxaAhIyu9YtN7t8nHbcSPS9u4DNzQu6JEn8wq59vTWwJXO9KAVD_iRXGwFesOc-tK9szXcqcVZ_Pl/s1600/il_fullxfull.686387743_9gz4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVot1QFmFNnDOdyBZrQilgmkBD9T3ubJMsc3MGn9X5ViEXBtsbs5h8h-eqCy7RD0uwxaAhIyu9YtN7t8nHbcSPS9u4DNzQu6JEn8wq59vTWwJXO9KAVD_iRXGwFesOc-tK9szXcqcVZ_Pl/s1600/il_fullxfull.686387743_9gz4.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
As usual, I will have a nice variety of pockets and features inside the bag: slip pockets, zippered pocket, optional pen slip pockets and a swivel clasp for keys. <br />

This year is no exception. I am signed up for 5 shows! I find it exciting and motivating to prepare for these shows except that my larger bags are definitely not show items. Which means I need to make smaller items with lower price points for those searching for smaller gift items.<br />
<br />
The most challenging and difficult part of what I do (for me personally) is deciding what to make. You can invest a lot of time and materials into making a huge quantity of a certain item only to find out it's simply not what people are looking for. I haven't had too many failures in the past as I tend to stick to items that are always needed: cosmetic bags, wallets, eco snack bags. The only huge failures I've had is bringing large bags ONLY. Huge mistake! People rarely gift someone with an expensive bag.<br />
<br />
This year I'm going to bring my usual small items but I'm also going to attempt to bring a selection of smaller bags made from my <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/151417221/the-camellia-cross-body-bag-pdf-sewing" target="_blank">Camellia cross body bag pattern</a>. This pattern is definitely my best seller and I'm hoping that it will entice a few customers at my shows. I wanted to order some new fabrics to make these bags and this is what showed up at my door yesterday:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1vTUQ4l70tKBhTkhLE2d9mo3sv1H-u6JxJUYX367JC7HpK5AznLPnsZS3dgC0K1lnDqJpsc-Tyv042275bQsjCAIO4FeQNJlQft6g8VSeWKuRa_4XhZX36G5UhwhIl2Bj0TPnrSKUAVBL/s1600/IMG_2599.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1vTUQ4l70tKBhTkhLE2d9mo3sv1H-u6JxJUYX367JC7HpK5AznLPnsZS3dgC0K1lnDqJpsc-Tyv042275bQsjCAIO4FeQNJlQft6g8VSeWKuRa_4XhZX36G5UhwhIl2Bj0TPnrSKUAVBL/s1600/IMG_2599.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I know it's hard to tell from the photo but most of them coordinate nicely with the most popular neutral colours: brown, grey or black. I will be using only faux leather for these bags. I am noticing a trend in non-leather bags at the moment so I ordered a few new rolls of faux leather in the most popular basic colours. I'll make sure to post photos of the bags once they are done - probably early next week!<br />

I tend to get bored quite easily and I'm always testing new ideas for upcoming patterns. I really enjoy making the <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/70494071/zippered-hobobag-sewing-patterntutorial" target="_blank">zippered hobo bag pattern</a> by NapKittenPattern on Etsy but wanted to create my own version. I also wanted to incorporate some leather accents - especially for the bottom. I've heard so many times how important it is to be able to set your bag down without dirtying the bottom.<br />
<br />
And I came up with this idea:<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggnmmOjGaGJOEo59WZUFXujCaWZx8mhFynrURi4cem0Vl7A1GwOvWr9ekhuO0uQPDr3os89W4bPZUaj5QMpmdyjR638aRc8f63mJN71csINmJYKPsM7e01XMafYnbF5hnfeh1-SbchyAHW/s1600/il_570xN.652321693_g789.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggnmmOjGaGJOEo59WZUFXujCaWZx8mhFynrURi4cem0Vl7A1GwOvWr9ekhuO0uQPDr3os89W4bPZUaj5QMpmdyjR638aRc8f63mJN71csINmJYKPsM7e01XMafYnbF5hnfeh1-SbchyAHW/s1600/il_570xN.652321693_g789.jpg" height="400" width="266" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Joel Dewberry's Swallow Study in Forest Home Dec Sateen<br />
with tan leather</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
It is a medium sized bag: about 15 inches wide at the widest part, 10 inches high in the center and about 4 inches deep. The strap is adjustable so the bag can be worn over one shoulder or cross body. Attaching the strap does require leather or faux leather with finished edges and some metal rivets. The bag itself is sewn the same way as a very large zipper pouch so the strap is attached in the very last step. I also love tassels so I thought a leather tassel attached to the zipper pull would be a very nice touch.<br />
<br />
Inside the bag are 3 slip pockets and 1 zippered pocket. The main closure is a metal YKK zipper. <br />
<br />
A bag like this does take a long time to make (about 3 to 4 hours total) which explains the higher cost in comparison to my other bags.<br />
<br />
I did make 3 of these in total but sadly ran out of rivets so I will need to wait to make more. Here are more photos for your viewing pleasure!<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Hand bleached denim with tan leather</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
The last bag was made using a dark navy denim that I bleached myself to create a beautiful random pattern. I will share my experiences with this technique in a future post. I am really loving the surprises I get with each different fabric, texture and pattern!<br />

Last time I posted - which I realize was an obscenely long time ago - I was almost done my Peony Tote. It has since launched and can be purchased <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/178380157/the-peony-pocket-tote-pdf-sewing-pattern" target="_blank">here</a> or <a href="http://bluecalla.bigcartel.com/product/the-peony-pocket-tote-pdf-sewing-pattern" target="_blank">here</a>.<br />
<br />
I have since designed and released the Thistle Pocket tote. This tote is what I consider to be medium sized bag and of course has my usual adjustable strap. I personally can't use a shoulder bag and need to be hands free. I also included the front pocket because I've heard from many customers throughout the years that they really preferred an outside pocket with a closure on the
outside of their purses.<br />
<br />
You can use a variety of different fabric combinations
for this bag! Use your imagination to create beautiful combinations of
coordinating or contrasting fabrics! You can use whatever type of button
or embellishments for the flap. I've even made a version with some
decorative stitching on the flap.<br />
<br />
Here are a few combinations I've tried with this pattern:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQJyEmazZIryJjj3G4YY0sBeicK_I2p_46MIat5phcDiruFNeUPQlYBdkt9Z3e9vwXwZBjLqWaZg7SxIk7_fOvV1_F2S5K5e-ydAxE50-DYIuOPhGto3p7EcNmBb0AkC9_3TQgOsgVb2Pm/s1600/IMG_0682.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQJyEmazZIryJjj3G4YY0sBeicK_I2p_46MIat5phcDiruFNeUPQlYBdkt9Z3e9vwXwZBjLqWaZg7SxIk7_fOvV1_F2S5K5e-ydAxE50-DYIuOPhGto3p7EcNmBb0AkC9_3TQgOsgVb2Pm/s1600/IMG_0682.jpg" height="400" width="266" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgD0ctvTp64X7bAxzUNVHpHvZ-MuylwEr6nqY7pwL_QBcI8C7jUv5Z-IRUyUoFyIBG0_saoY2I2BHj1D8PuUR8aFXc-xYTVlmas0ESKTwPbxHsOq6egA0gWCy-G5FhpABK4iVfbtsMloqfg/s1600/IMG_0696.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgD0ctvTp64X7bAxzUNVHpHvZ-MuylwEr6nqY7pwL_QBcI8C7jUv5Z-IRUyUoFyIBG0_saoY2I2BHj1D8PuUR8aFXc-xYTVlmas0ESKTwPbxHsOq6egA0gWCy-G5FhpABK4iVfbtsMloqfg/s1600/IMG_0696.jpg" height="400" width="266" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
For the interior of the bag, I
give instructions for one large slip pocket but you are free to add more
pockets to the interior if you wish. I've also included instructions
for a zippered pocket.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCiH4X3UVSqUtAApg4nR_Jn5Q9EGzIEwhtdvbB4FdJ3c-8OjVwHEixaq_AqmS3uMYWTb1k7gZcAWuzVo0WyOMtQEJIn_ZnzX75Q9XmaVfNiY6_btBSMzGRvDQlq5jHJbU8AwUvFEp0MRKI/s1600/IMG_0702.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCiH4X3UVSqUtAApg4nR_Jn5Q9EGzIEwhtdvbB4FdJ3c-8OjVwHEixaq_AqmS3uMYWTb1k7gZcAWuzVo0WyOMtQEJIn_ZnzX75Q9XmaVfNiY6_btBSMzGRvDQlq5jHJbU8AwUvFEp0MRKI/s1600/IMG_0702.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I've recently been asked my a few pattern customers to design bags with a zipper closure however I didn't get to that this time and stayed with a magnetic snap closure. My next pattern however, will have a zippered closure. <br />
<br />
As for measurements, this bag is about 13.5 inches wide at the widest point and about 10.5 inches high. The depth is 4 inches and since the strap is adjustable, you can make it as long as you like. I think a beginner could tackle this project but it's best suited for someone which some previous bag making skills.<br />
<br />
You can try out the Thistle Pocket tote yourself by purchasing it <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/198107576/new-the-thistle-pocket-tote-bag-pdf" target="_blank">here</a> or <a href="http://bluecalla.bigcartel.com/product/new-the-thistle-pocket-tote-bag-pdf-sewing-pattern" target="_blank">here</a>.Blue Calla - Celinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15384361616710568199noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3572484891333244684.post-55746868698160037912014-04-07T07:09:00.003-07:002015-01-01T14:23:58.378-08:00Pattern Review: Natty Janes Leather Baby ShoeI haven't sewn any new baby items in quite a while but when this pattern popped up in my Facebook news feed I could not resist. Some friends of ours are having a baby girl in a couple of months and I thought this would make a great gift!<br />
<br />
I also happen to have TONS of leather scraps in my sewing room so I picked out 2 coordinating colours and went to work. The pattern pieces are simple to print and cut out. The instructions are clear and simple. Sewing with leather is not very easy though.<br />
<br />
I used very soft lambskin leather for the shoes' uppers and that tends to really shift and move around when you're sewing with it. So I did line my shoes with felt as suggested in the pattern and whenever I could, I did my sewing with the felt side up which really helped. I used a stiffer cowhide leather for the soles in a neutral beige colour.<br />
<br />
I decided to go with the simple mary jane style of shoe and added some straps that matches the toe caps. The tops of the heels did not line up perfectly which really irks me as I like things to be perfect. I used pearl snaps for the straps and one of them is not exactly in the position I would have liked but since leather does not forgive, I could not remove it and change the position. Of course, for my first pair they are far from perfect. But it's not bad for a first try! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEik3koNndgC0QR0m2VBlhPFz2VlxHZmVP2zQW-EGH91wK7NzuM3D4w9HaHuQ8i0aI62j4QjsKg5W2qb-kNF0ToG8kDT8y3ZL_-v8YGPXIjLIe5UopjjzxmK_8a-maw1AswgZl4ejrBJAcrI/s1600/IMG_5888.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEik3koNndgC0QR0m2VBlhPFz2VlxHZmVP2zQW-EGH91wK7NzuM3D4w9HaHuQ8i0aI62j4QjsKg5W2qb-kNF0ToG8kDT8y3ZL_-v8YGPXIjLIe5UopjjzxmK_8a-maw1AswgZl4ejrBJAcrI/s1600/IMG_5888.jpg" height="265" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Now Mr Blue Calla mentioned that perhaps my colour choices are not appropriate for a baby girl. I personally love using anything other than pink. Would you put these on your daughter? Should I make a pair of red ones instead? Brown ones?<br />
<br />
If you'd like to attempt making your own, here is the <a href="http://www.deliacreates.com/2013/12/natty-janes-leather-baby-shoe-pattern-release.html" target="_blank">pattern</a>.Blue Calla - Celinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15384361616710568199noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3572484891333244684.post-25806189842655325942014-02-01T07:25:00.002-08:002015-01-17T05:06:04.224-08:00The Peony Pocket Tote - Coming soon!I am currently working on a new pattern - this time a medium/large sized cross body tote with 2 large outside pockets on the front. I wanted to create a bag with many different possibilities in terms of fabric and colour combinations but keep it fairly simple to create.<br />
<br />
I am also badly in need of a new Spring bag that can hold a few extra items than my current mini-messenger and I MUST have a cross body bag. So I guess this new pattern is a bit for my own convenience as well. :)<br />
<br />
Here are some photos:<br />
<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCzQIfdEyCB9jI5eOj2qjd9rGsLV2MCURfY0PXXE4MwavOvnp2p8ykG6NpdNlGYdaPaQRIAz6mGx0uGEsbMU1Nor5niQwYhiZjz9_W8n3LXo4j-nwxUANlQdSzwEJapl-KzgY9GaxvFivX/s1600/IMG_4137_2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCzQIfdEyCB9jI5eOj2qjd9rGsLV2MCURfY0PXXE4MwavOvnp2p8ykG6NpdNlGYdaPaQRIAz6mGx0uGEsbMU1Nor5niQwYhiZjz9_W8n3LXo4j-nwxUANlQdSzwEJapl-KzgY9GaxvFivX/s1600/IMG_4137_2.jpg" height="270" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The back of the bag is just the main fabric. There is an accent fabric used for the top band as well as the binding on the top and bottom edge of the front pocket piece. There are 2 separate front pockets with 4 pleats top and bottom.<br />

The inside of the bag has my typical formula: 2 large slip pockets and 1 zippered pocket. The bag has a magnetic closure. I am just finishing up one last sample bag for the pattern and then I will get writing (my least favourite part!). Stay tuned...</div>

<br />
<br />
I added the Petunia Pouch pattern to my Etsy pattern shop a few days ago but because of the holidays, I have not had time to post about it. I had a hard time deciding whether it should be a beginner pattern or not but to be safe, I wrote that it would require some experience with zippers and preferably a more simple style of zipper pouch.<br />
<br />
It's really not difficult to make this rounded pouch, it may just seem that way because you can't sew all around the entire pouch at once when sewing the body pieces together. In any case, I think you should give it a try!
